What is DMT?

Since then, different groups of researchers were credited for discovering its presence in different plants and animals. For example, an American team led by Ara der Marderosian was able to discover the presence of DMT in Psychotria viridis. On the other hand, Jacques Poisson identified the presence of DMT in the Diplopterys cabrerana.

It’s illegal by virtue of the the UN 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances which classifies it as a Schedule 1 drug. This means that it can only be used for medicinal purposes and scientific research. The same classification applies in the US. However, there’s precedence in allowing the drug for religious ceremonies. In February of 2006, the Supreme Court allowed the importation and consumption of a tea with DMT by the União do Vegetal church. This is by virtue of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993.
